Here is the complete instructions on how to install white gauge faces in your 240SX.
Here are a list of tools needed
1. 10mm socket
2. 12mm socket
3. 6" extension & ratchet
4. Phillips head screw driver
5. Plastic squeegee
6. Small needle-nose plyers
7. Vinyl application fluid or window film aid
8. Sharpy permanet marker
9. X-acto knife BEFORE DISCONECTING ANY OF THE ELECTRONIC PIECES I WOULD SUGGEST UNHOOKING THE NEGITIVE BATTERY CABLE FIRST.
1. Remove the lower dash pannel.
2. Remove 6 phillips head screws from the steering wheel column cover and remove lower half of shell (at this time remove the key ring cover and the tilt ring). put the steering wheel in the fully downward position to remove the top half.
3. On the HAZZ/DEF/LIGHTS housing there are two screws above the gauge cluster remove them.
4. Look under the steering column there will be 2 12mm bolts on either side remove them.
5. Unclip pushbutton housing from the bottom reach in and unhook the harnesses for HAZZ/R.DEF/LIGHTS etc.
6. Remove the push button housing by lightly pushing down on the steering column, and slide out.
7. Now that the gauge cluster is in full view remove the 3 phillips screws and pull cluster out easily (if you have HUD pull cluster half way out and disconnect). Carefully remove harnesses from back of cluster, and take whole unit to a clean work area.
8. unclip black housing cover from the edges of the gauge cluster and pull apart (at this time the cluster should be fully exposed).
9. Lift the TACH face up enough to slip the needle-nose plyers under and pop out the needle rest post (if you look under the face you will be able to see where you are to pinch the back side of the post to pop in out of place). The post pops back in.
10. Now you have to turn the needle lightly counterclockways until resistance is felt, when the needle stops mark the side of the gauge face, you will need this later when you calibrate the gauges.
11. On the TACH ONLY! you will have to remove the hole unit. If you try to turn your needle all the way around it will hit the time adjuster making it impossible to pass. If you look on the back side of the cluster there are 3 phillips head screws that look the be around the center of the TACH needle, remove these and carefully pull TACH unit out. You will notice the clock unit will still be in the cluster.
12. Turn the needle 3 time carefully counterclockwise to losen it from the metal shaft it sits on (DO NOT PULL THE NEEDLE OFF WITHOUT TURNING AT THE SAME TIME WHEREAS IT WILL DAMAGE THE UNIT AND YOU WILL HAVE TO GET A NEW ONE). After about 3-4 turns start pulling lightly up at the same time as you turn the needle, after about 6 turns it should come off.
13. Take your X-acto knife and carefully scrape the back of the needle to remove the white paint. Take your sharpy marker (I used red, but it is all personal preference) and color back side of the needle, let dry and re-apply to your liking.
14. Remove 2 screws from TACH gauge face and pull off the face & Rinse under warm water. I used window film aid to apply my faces I felt that it would work just as good as Vinyl application fluid and it did. add a full bottle of film aid to 950ml or 1 quart of water and mix thoroughly. I used a bowl to dip my gauge faces in, the film aid got applied more evenly rather than spraying them.
15. dip faces into film aid mixture making sure that they are drentched, apply the newly aquried face where you find fit, and press down firmly use your squeegee to remove bubbles and any water trapped underneath, careful not to move face.
16. Let gauge face dry for about 30min under a lamp or on a window ledge facing the sun. The idea of this is to let the faces set, peel edge of application tape making sure that the face does not lift from the original, if it starts to lift let dry for about 10min more do this with each face.
17. after all faces are set re-asemble cluster by screwing all faces back in the correct place.
18. (THIS IS IMPORTANT TO CALABRATE YOUR GAUGES CORRECTLY). Place needle back on the shaft at the 4 o'clock position, press down not to hard you could damage the unit. When the needle is all the way on the shaft turn the needle counterclockwise to the calabration point you marked earlier. When this is done turn the needle clockwise to the 12 o'clock position and pop the needle rest back in its hole. do this to all gauges.
19. Place the black housing back on cluster and re-asemble everything the opposite of removal.
IF THESE INTRUCTIONS ARE NOT FOLLOWED COMPLETELY YOU WILL DAMAGE YOUR CLUSTER.
